INDIAN AMERICAN POPULATION
 
According to the 2006 American Community Survey, the total population of Indian Americans is 2,662,112 (0.9% of U.S. population)
 
The largest ten Indian American populations, in order, with respect to the U.S. states are California, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia 2.

The population of Indian Americans has surged manifold times. The years 1990-1999 saw 352,278 Indian immigrants and between 2000-2006, a total of 421,006 Indian immigrants were recorded. As per the US census, from 1990 to 2000, the overall growth rate for Indians was 105.87%, when the average growth rate for the entire USA was only 7.6% 3. As per the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, the Asian Indian population witnessed a growth rate of 38%, from 1,678,000 in 2000 to 2,319,000 in 2005. Just during the year 2006, USA witnessed a total of 1,266,264 legal immigrants, out of which 58,072 were from India. Currently the immigration from India is at is highest level so far recorded. This growth rate is the highest for any Asian American community. Today, Indian Americans are the third largest Asian American ethnic group, after Chinese Americans and Filipino Americans 4, 5, 6.
